The Game of the Gael is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the West Highland Museum in Fort William which boasts, among its significant collections of historical material, some very important shinty artefacts which will be the centrepiece of this event.
Two local shinty aficionados Gary Innes and Hugh Dan MacLennan will be returning to their home stomping ground to weave a web of wayward strands around the museum’s shinty holdings and local songs, tunes and stories about the game.
The focus will be on the history of shinty in the whole of Lochaber from Spean Bridge through Fort William, to Ballachulish and across to Kilmallie. Gary and Hugh Dan will reflect on their own parts in the evolving and continuing history of shinty around the town and will be recalling many of the game’s most important occasions.
Amongst the artefacts on display will be the MacLagan caman from Argyll-shire, an authentic Ballachulish-type caman believed to have been made by the great caman maker Hughie Buchanan and several medals dating back to the decade of the establishment of the museum when Lochaber were a force to be reckoned with in senior shinty. The show will also include some items rarely seen before and one or two surprise items which have never been shown publicly.
