South Uist poet Donald Macdonald gave the name “ The Glen of Muses”, to the remote glen in South Lochboisdale where Pittsburgh born folklorist and photographer Margaret Fay Shaw met her own ‘muses’ in 1929, the MacRae sisters Pèigi and Màiri. In this online talk, Gaelic singer and Canna House archivist Fiona J Mackenzie explores the world which surrounded Margaret for 6 years before her marriage to John Lorne Campbell and uses archive recordings of the songs which Margaret collected diary entries, photographs, original archive film footage and excerpts of letters between Margaret and her landladies, to tell the story of life on the croft in the tiny glen at North Glendale.

Fiona will also sing some of the songs from the Archives and looks forward to answering any questions and discussing the lives of these three indomitable female pioneers of 20th century folklore in the Hebrides.
