Scotland’s Gaelic tradition boasts a rich vein of traditional hero tales. In this one hour workshop, storyteller Ruairidh Maclean will talk about the corpus, giving examples of characters and stories, and will explain how he and his son Calum developed a new Gaelic website gaisgeach.com which makes twenty such tales available free for download – as scripts and audio files – told in modern, accessible Gaelic. Half of the stories came from a living storyteller, George MacPherson of Glendale in Skye, who tells his vast corpus of tales in English, although he gathered them from older Gaelic speakers who were themselves steeped in oral tradition. Ruairidh explains how he translated a few of George’s tales from English back into Gaelic. He hopes that gaisgeach.com will encourage the telling of traditional tales in Gaelic and that modern Gaels will come to better understand their remarkable cultural heritage. This illustrated talk will be in Gaelic, with simultaneous English translation for non Gaelic speakers.

This will be delivered in Gaelic with simultaneous translation available.
